There were rumours of the discontinuation of Chevrolet bolt production, but they have been replaced by the good news of a massive price drop for the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV. The Bolt is now the cheapest EV in the United States, significantly increasing its appeal.
The Bolt's powertrain carries over unchanged. A 65-kWh battery sends 200 hp and 266 lb-ft to the front wheels. As a result, its 0-60-mph time is a relatively quick 6.4 seconds, and a button on the console activates its one-pedal driving mode for drivers who prefer a brake-free experience. Last year's Bolt EV earned an EPA rating of 120 mpg-e, and we expect similar numbers from the current model. In addition, Chevy claims a range of 259 miles and a full charge time of 7 hours at a 240V charging station. Those numbers compare well to a Nissan Leaf or a base Tesla Model 3.
Some of the Bolt EV's biggest competition comes from across the showroom in the form of the Bolt EUV, its slightly longer, more rugged variant. Not to be outdone by its little sibling, the EUV sees a price reduction of $6,300 for the 2023 model year.
Even after the price drop, the EUV costs $1,600 more than the EV. That money buys an extra 3 inches of rear legroom and not much else. Despite the extra length, cargo capacity and headroom are nearly identical between the two. The Bolt EUV gets roof rails, but ground clearance remains at a sedan-like 5.6 inches.
The other consideration is GM's Super Cruise technology, which offers Level 2 autonomous driving on many North American highways. It's only available on the Bolt EUV.
